PSU's Johnson to speak at Manheim banquet Touchdown Club to honor Warwick grad Resch, Penn Manor grad Booth
The Manheim Touchdown Club Awards Banquet will be held Thursday, May 23, at the Lancaster Host Resort and Convention Center beginning with a reception at 5:30 p.m.
Larry Johnson, longtime defensive line coach at Penn State, will be the featured speaker.
Program highlights will include the announcement of the L-L League Player of the Year. Jon Resch of Warwick High School and The Coast Guard Academy will receive the Dr. Gene Carpenter Award as the Small College Player of the Year, and Cody Booth of Penn Manor High School and Temple University will receive the award for the Big College Player of the Year.
The Gene Upshaw Award for the College Division II Lineman of the Year will also be part of the program.
The L-L League coaches will be introduced along with the players participating in the Tri- County All Star Game to be played Saturday, May 25, in Manheim.
Johnson is in his 18th season on the Penn State staff and his 14th season as the defensive line coach. He has been an instrumental member of the Nittany Lions' recruiting efforts and defensive and special teams success during his tenure.
Johnson has developed seven first team All-Americans and six Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year or Defensive Lineman of the Year honorees since 1999. Johnson also coached 14 first-team All-Big Ten performers.
Under Johnson's tutelage Lebanon High grad Jared Odrick was a First-Team All-American and an NFL first-round draft choice.
A highly-successful high school head coach in the Washington, D.C. area for more than 20 years, Johnson is a graduate of Elizabeth City (N.C.) State University, earning NAIA All-American honors at linebacker.
One son, Larry, became just the ninth player in NCAA history to rush for 2,000 yards in a season in 2002 and was a two-time All-Pro pick with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Another son, Tony, was a PSU wide receiver from 2000 to 2003, ranking 11th in school career receptions.
