Man and police in standoff
In Elizabethtown BY JENNIFER TODD, Staff Writer
A man apparently armed with a gun held police at bay for three hours Sunday night in Elizabethtown, but the standoff ended peacefully before midnight.
At 8 p.m., police received a dispatch from Lancaster County-Wide Communications stating that a resident of the first block of South Market Street reported a gun had been fired in a nearby apartment.
Police responded and briefly spoke with the suspect on the phone. The man hung up and refused further attempts at communication.
The Lancaster County Special Emergency Response Team was called to the scene at 9 p.m.
All residents of the apartment building were evacuated, and police closed South Market Street around the scene, about a half-block from the square. The standoff ended at 11:10 p.m. when the man walked out of his apartment, which is on the second floor of the building, officials said.
It was not clear Sunday night what led to the incident. The man's name was not released.
