Harrisburg mayor's comment angers some rural neighbors
HARRISBURG (AP) -- Some officials in Perry County are demanding an apology from Harrisburg Mayor Linda Thompson for a derogatory remark about the rural neighboring county.
Thompson was talking about local trash collection at a news conference Wednesday when she turned to the chronic problem of out-of-towners illegally dumping bulky items in the Pennsylvania capital.
She said city officials won't tolerate such behavior by -- in her words -- "some scumbag" from Perry County.
Several elected officials in Perry County demanded an apology. County Commissioner Stephen Naylor called Thompson's remarks crude and said they were offensive to the many county residents who work in government offices in Harrisburg and pay city taxes and parking fees.
