Roscoe "Skip" Ward
Roscoe "Skip" Clemans Ward, 90, of Mechanicsburg, PA passed away Monday, March 25, 2013 at Messiah Village, Mechanicsburg. Born March 16, 1923 in Benson, WV, he was the son of the late Ross and Belva (Clemans) Ward.Skip was a graduate of Unidis High School Class of 1941 and obtained employment with the West Penn Power Company in Morgantown, WV. In the fall of 1941, Skip migrated to Baltimore where two life altering events occurred. First, he was introduced to his future wife, Virginia Madalee (Greenstreet) Ward, whom he married on September 12, 1945 and shared 63 wonderful years of marriage before her passing in 2007. Secondly, following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Skip found himself enlisting in the US Navy Aviation Program. While serving as a Navy Pilot during World War II, his service duties allowed him to live in numerous parts of the country and experience carrier duties in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans before his honorable discharge in 1947.Returning to civilian life, Skip enrolled at West Virginia University on the GI Bill. While in college, he found summer employment with the Christopher Coal Company working in their machine shop located 3 miles underground. In the spring of 1951, Skip received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering and promptly accepted a position with the General Electric Company. Skip retired after 35 years of dedicated service in the Engineering and Marketing departments associated with the Electric Utility Industry.
Throughout the many locations of residence, especially in Maryland and Pennsylvania, Skip had been active in Southern Baptist Church activities, including various departmental offices of teaching, training, and serving as a Deacon. He was deeply involved in community service and had always been a generous man donating to numerous charities. Skip found great enjoyment in many hobbies. He was particularly fond of reading, gardening, golfing, fishing, but most of all his greatest joy came from the time he spent with his family and friends. He was a strong Christian man believing and striving to follow the teachings of our Lord. He was a member of Wrightsdale Baptist Church in Peach Bottom, PA and was actively involved in the religious activities at Country Meadows of Mechanicsburg.Surviving are his four children, Ronald G. Ward and wife Linda of Mt. Airy, MD; Rickey D. Ward and wife Mary of Damascus, MD; G. Charlene Wolf and husband Steven Wolf, M.D. of Mechanicsburg, PA; Mark B. Ward and wife Cindi of Locust, NC; 15 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Skip was preceded in death by his four sisters, Mabel, Mildred, Julia and Edna.Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, March 30, 2013 at Wrightsdale Baptist Church, Peach Bottom, PA with viewing held from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Burial will take place at Glen Haven Memorial Park, Glen Burnie, MD.
