Santorum launches gun petition

A conservative group led by Rick Santorum on Thursday launched an online petition to stop gun control measures being pushed by the Obama administration.
The petition launched by Patriot Voices calls on elected officials to stop efforts aimed at enacting universal background checks. Within a few hours of its posting, the petition had about 1,800 signatures.
Santorum, a former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania who ran unsuccessfully for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, said putting further restrictions on law abiding gun owners is not the answer to recent incidents of gun violence.
"We have gun laws in place, we need to work hard to enforce existing laws, not create new laws that do nothing to deter criminals and madmen," the petition states.
Gun limits including expanded background checks have become a focus point in the national debate over what new laws, if any, are needed to prevent gun violence after recent mass shootings.
