Squandering money on voter ID
TO THE EDITORS:
It was recently reported in this newspaper that Pennsylvania Secretary of State Carol Aichele defended her agency's efforts to educate voters about the voter ID law by pointing out that it had spent $4.9 million in federal money on a media campaign. She did not mention how many additional millions of state and local taxpayer dollars have been spent to enact and implement this law.
It is commonly understood that, since voter fraud in Pennsylvania is virtually nonexistent, the true intent of the voter ID law is to turn away voters who would have the most difficulty complying with the strict ID requirements.
This law is shamefully anti-democratic, and the sad irony is that it is being funded by taxpayers whose votes it intends to suppress. The millions of dollars being squandered on carrying out this unnecessary and harmful law could have been used for programs and services that would truly benefit the people of this commonwealth.
