March 4, 2013Ellsworth S. McAllister, 97, of Oxford, PA passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, March 4, 2013.He was the loving husband of the late Doris A. McAllister with whom he shared 65 years of marriage.Born in Lower Oxford Township in Chester County, he was the son of the late David B. and Ethel F. McAllister.Ellsworth attended grade school (1st ? 8th grades) at Jackson School House and graduated from Avon Grove High School in 1934. After graduation, he worked for Robert Treat Hogg as a furniture finisher. He also raised hatching eggs for Bill Burling?s Hatchery. From 1943-1946 Ellsworth served as a Master Sergeant in the United States Army, stationed in Europe during WWII. After returning home, he managed the Oxford Farm Bureau and eventually retired from Agway as a field representative in 1982.Ellsworth was a member of the Oxford United Methodist Church and the Russellville Grange, as well as being a member of the Skerrett Lodge No. 343 of Cochranville, Past Master in 1953. He was a long time 4-H Leader, served as a Judge of Election for Lower Oxford Township for 28 years and volunteered for the Oxford Community Chest.His favorite sport was baseball, which he played in local leagues for many years. His hobbies included gardening, playing pinochle, catching snapping turtles and trapping muskrats.Ellsworth is survived by two brothers, Donald McAllister of Harbeson, DE, and Jack McAllister of Blue Ridge Summit, PA. He was preceded in death by three brothers, David McAllister, Howard McAllister and Richard McAllister, and six sisters, Anna Mae McAllister, Dorothy Smith, Mary Reese, Sara Younger, Mildred Parsons and Hazel Peters.He is survived by five sons, Dr. Scott McAllister and wife Barbara of Centre Hall, PA, Thomas J. McAllister and wife Nancy of Warfordsburg, PA, William D. McAllister and wife Karen of Coatesville, PA, L. Wesley McAllister and wife Paula of Petersburg, PA, and H. David McAllister of Oxford, PA, three daughters, Janet A. Mowrer and husband Michael of Petersburg, PA, S. Jill Sajeski and husband Frank of Alexandria, PA, and Cathy A. Boyd and husband Patrick of Rising Sun, MD, 20 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 7 at Oxford United Methodist Church, 18 Addison St., Oxford, where relatives and friends may call from 10-10:45 a.m.Relatives and friends may also call from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Edward L. Collins, Jr. Funeral Home, Inc., 86 Pine St., Oxford.
