U.S. lacks knowledge, character
TO THE EDITORS:
Nations are destroyed for lack of knowledge and poor character. Our nation is suffering from both.
Ignorant people are easy prey for tyrants. Immoral people simply destroy themselves. In discussions over gun control, birth control, government control/takeover, out of control debt, health care (control), we fail to speak of the common root of our problems: uninformed people, poor character and a growing culture of immorality.
Greed, lust and selfish ambition have led to corruption in our social institutions, with finance and government topping the list. Laziness leads to an entitlement mentality. Ignorance produces people who do not care. Our government is bloated and broke with little regard for our Constitution.
John Adams wrote, "We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge or gallantry, would break the strongest cords of our Constitution ... made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."
