No home for family with dog
TO THE EDITORS:
Recently, my husband and I began a search for a new home as we have outgrown our current apartment. We have a 7-year old black lab that I rescued from a puppy mill two years ago. Her life consisted of living in a barn and being bred four times in her short five-year life.
When I got her, she was so filthy I could not remove her collar because it was stuck to her fur with dirt. She didn't know what a treat was, but quickly learned. She is the most amazing dog I have ever met! She does not bark, and is so loving.
The problem we have encountered is trying to rent a home while having a dog over 35 pounds. No one will allow it. I have offered to pay a pet deposit and a monthly pet fee with no avail.
It is very frustrating and sad that no one will allow such a wonderful dog into their home, especially with a monetary guarantee that no damage will be done. It is a sad state when the prospect of one of your beloved family members may not be able to remain with you because of people's ignorance of larger dogs. My heart is truly breaking. I just hope there is someone out there who will allow her to move with us.
