W. Donegal bridge to be rebuilt for $1.4M

A West Donegal Township bridge that has been closed for 17 years is finally on track for reconstruction.

Supervisors on Monday approved a $1.4 million contract with Kinsley Construction, of York, to reconstruct the bridge on Newville Road between Turnpike Road and Route 230.

The township is responsible for 5 percent of the cost, while federal money will cover 80 percent and state money will fund 15 percent.

Supervisor Chairman Roger Snyder said the project needs approval from Amtrak. As soon as construction begins, the project should be completed in 275 work days.

In other business:

n Melissa Hartman, 19 Espendshade Drive, said Monday she is concerned about a township easement which allows water to flow into her yard.

She said the township improved the situation several months ago, but the problem continues. Snyder directed Gene Oldham, township manager, and Jeff Templin, road supervisor, to review the site and report back by the next meeting.

n Candence Abel received approval for a major earth disturbance plan on a 52-acre tract bordered by Greider, Landis and Bossler roads.

n Supervisors approved a schedule that increases zoning hearing fees to $650 for residential and $750 for commercial hearings. The full schedule is available at the township office.

n The board approved to hold its annual spring cleanup day, although the date has yet to be determined. Supervisor Nancy Garber said cleanup day cost the township $4,000 last year, but after sales of scrap metal, the net cost was $2,900. To keep costs down, the event will be scheduled from 7 till noon rather than all day long.
