West Lampeter residents warned to report suspicious activity to 911

If West Lampeter residents have any doubt about whether to dial 911 when they see suspicious behavior, township police Chief James Walsh advises, "call" the hotline.
A resident's call helped the police department capture two armed suspects who allegedly burglarized nine homes over the weekend, Walsh told township supervisors Monday.
The police captured the first suspect about 4 a.m. Monday. The second suspect initially got away, but was later taken into custody in Coatesville at 6 p.m.
Both had handguns. One of them grew up in West Lampeter, Walsh said.
"We have to get our people to call" when they see suspicious activity, the chief said.
In other news, township residents with loved ones who could wander off will soon have a way to protect them. Walsh said Friends of the Force, a group that raises money to help the township police, will pay $5,000 for wristbands that emit a tracking signal.
The family of a resident with dementia, for example, could have a band placed on their loved one's wrist. If the person goes missing, the police will be able to locate them. Anyone interested in obtaining one of the wristbands should contact the township police.
The supervisors also:
n Heard from Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA director Tracey Brunke that the Y would like to like to increase the size of its board by two people. The supervisors, who would need to agree to the move, said they would discuss it before making a decision.
n Learned from resident Morey Young that a fund drive for a memorial to honor township residents past and present has raised more than $10,000. The drive will continue until May.
n Looked at sketches of possible designs for signs in front of the township building and Village Park.
n Listened to a presentation by Jeff Lambert of Greenspring Energy about the advantages of putting solar panels on the municipal building. Lambert said the project would cost the township $511,000, but would provide a payback after five years.
The township is gathering information about solar panels, but has made no decision to pursue a project.
