U. Leacock OKs contract for stray dogs

Upper Leacock supervisors have approved a one-year agreement with the Lancaster Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to take care of stray dogs.
The action, taken Feb. 7, follows the Humane League of Lancaster County's recent announcement that it will no longer be accepting strays.
"We're very fortunate to have the SPCA come in and pick up where the Humane League left off," said Michael Morris, township manager.
Morris said he'd been in touch with the East Lampeter police department, which monitors stray dogs for Upper Leacock, and everything will work as it has with the Humane League in the past.
The SPCA will look after the dogs, feeding, exercising and giving veterinary care until they can be reunited with their owners or adopted. Euthanasia will be considered for animals that cannot be offered for adoption.
Morris said Upper Leacock will pay the SPCA $7,950 for its services in 2013. This represents a $300 charge per dog based on the average number of strays picked up over the past two years.
In other business, supervisor chairman Ron Simmons decried the theft of a scooter from a Plain community member who volunteers with the ambulance association .
When the volunteer responded to an emergency call a month ago, Simmons said, he left his scooter along the road at the meeting point where he boarded the ambulance. When the volunteer returned, the scooter was gone.
"Here's a guy that's trying to do the right thing for the community, he's a volunteer and someone takes his scooter," Simmons said. "That's not right."
Simmons said the scooter was worth $180.
