Manheim Township High School's Quiz Bowl team bested Penn Manor to win the Anne Clouser Championship Tournament on Monday night.

The team of Matthew Allen, Campbell Fitzhugh, Sam Goldman and Ean Manley outscored Penn Manor 530-180 and is eligible to compete at the state championship in Harrisburg on May 3.

The championship round got off to a shaky start when both Penn Manor and Township gave wrong answers to the first of 20 toss-up questions.

But Township began to pull away and had the championship won well before questions were completed.

Lancaster-Lebanon Quiz Bowl League got this year's questions from National Academic Quiz Tournaments, which organizes tournaments, and because it may use the questions again, it prohibits sharing them, according to Kay Baxter, coordinator for the Lancaster-Lebanon Quiz Bowl League,

So while the questions can't be shared -- what the heck; here are some of the correct answers: Base. Water. Trenton. Caduceus. Gay marriage. "Red Badge of Courage."

Broadly speaking, the questions touched on history, Greek mythology, the sciences, literature, mathematics and sports.

Suffice it to say, the Township team members knew their stuff.

They credited each other's strengths in different academic areas and teamwork for the win.

"You're always studying for quiz bowl. Just sometimes you realize it," said Fitzhugh, a senior who has been involved with Quiz Bowl since he was in seventh grade.

Case in point: Manley said he happened to learn something earlier Monday when he was on the Internet that ended up helping him during the tournament.

Manheim Township hosted 23 schools from three counties in the tournament.

The Township team said it was nice to bring the trophy back "home," as York Suburban won last year. Township won in 2011 and 2010.

The top four teams -- Township, Penn Manor, Conestoga Valley and York Suburban -- also qualified for the 2013 High School National Championship Tournament in Atlanta over Memorial Day weekend.

Other Lancaster County participating schools included: Columbia, Donegal, Elizabethtown, Hempfield, Pequea Valley, Warwick, Manheim Central, Garden Spot, Lampeter-Strasburg, Lancaster Catholic, Lancaster Country Day, Ephrata and Cocalico.
