Flight 93 Memorial center work to begin Sergeant shot by fellow officer

SHANKSVILLE -- Groundbreaking is scheduled this summer for a visitor center and other improvements at the Flight 93 National Memorial in southwestern Pennsylvania.

National Park Service officials told the Flight 93 Advisory Commission on Saturday that final documents will be ready for contracting no later than March 19.

The visitor center will house permanent exhibits and have a viewing window allowing people to look down to the site. The $20 million work also includes a pedestrian bridge over the wetlands and perhaps a learning center.

BALDWIN -- Authorities in western Pennsylvania say a Pittsburgh-area police sergeant was shot in the back by a fellow officer as both were responding to an early morning domestic call.

Emergency dispatchers in Allegheny County said four officers were sent to a Baldwin home at 3:45 a.m. Sunday. County police superintendent Charles Moffet said officers repeatedly asked the man who answered the door to show a hand that wasn't visible, and then two shots were fired. One hit the sergeant in the back, between his vest and his belt. A third officer then fired into the side of the house before the man was taken into custody.

Baldwin police chief Michael Scott said the injured officer was in stable condition, "in good spirits and ...very supportive of the officer who injured him."
