TO THE EDITORS:

I realize I don't share the majority opinion in Central Pennsylvania regarding guns, and I think that banning assault weapons from the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show says something big about the organizers, Reed Exhibitions.

I can't believe the self-righteous arrogance of the 200-plus participants who dropped out of a family oriented Pennsylvania tradition due to some hero-complex triggered by the ban of one type of weapon. Yes, disassociating from the show on "principle'' does make a statement ... a childish one.

Why does a citizen not engaging in active combat need an assault-style weapon? It's alarming and disheartening to me that outdoor recreational activities involving guns are simply not satisfying or enjoyable without a quick-firing, military-style weapon, or that owning a plain old deer rifle is just downright boring. How did our predecessors ever manage to lead fulfilling lives without the ego boost of high-capacity magazines? From what threat do we need Rambo-style defense?

I absolutely believe in the importance of the Second Amendment, and ardently support responsible hunting. Had the Founding Fathers foreseen the menacing arsenal with which too many today feel entitled to "arm'' themselves, the right of gun ownership is one we may have never known.

Why push it to the nth degree?
