GOP led way on civil rights
TO THE EDITORS:
It's painfully obvious that John N. Fishel, Dallastown, never listened to Paul Harvey or else he would have known the importance of "The Rest of the Story.'' That is with respect to his letter, Jan. 16, concerning the passage of the long overdue, much-needed Civil Rights Act of 1964.
The rest of the story is that two Republican senators were instrumental in breaking the filibuster in the Senate, instigated in large part by 18 Democratic senators.
Also to be noted is that the final vote in the Senate was 71-29, passing for once and all a bill which also outlawed discrimination against religious minorities and women and other minority, ethnic and national minorities.
Oh, yes, 23 for the 29 dissenting votes were cast by Democrats.
To put it another way, 82 percent of Republicans voted for the bill, 69 percent of Democrats voted against it.
