Township should rethink gun ruling
TO THE EDITORS:
We feel compelled to take a stand on the East Lampeter Township supervisors' decision to allow people to carry guns in township parks. Because we live in East Lampeter Township, we frequent these parks and have enjoyed safe and quiet surroundings. We were appalled when we read that the supervisors had changed the ordinance to allow people to carry firearms within the parks.
Our favorite park is the East Lampeter Township Community Park, which has playgrounds that are enjoyed by families with small children and picnic shelters enjoyed by families, including our Amish and Plain neighbors. We have enjoyed walking our dog on the paved walking paths and enjoyed the beautiful landscaping.
What was a safe place to relax now has us thinking we may not want to frequent these parks, since people are allowed to carry firearms.
With so much killing and gun violence, we should be trying to provide more areas where we and others can feel safe. We hope the township supervisors will rethink this matter.
