Northeast braces for a blizzard

Mostly rain here? Northeast braces for a blizzard

BY TOM KNAPP, Staff Writer

Friday might be a mess.

Accuweather.com meteorologist Evan Myers says "a major storm -- in some cases, an all-out blizzard" -- is on its way up the coast and is likely to hit the Northeast sometime Friday evening.

While portions of New England could see 12 or more inches of snow, the Lancaster County region likely will get a pass.

Accuweather.com says the high on Friday will be around 40, and meteorologist Valerie Smock says locally we'll see "rain mixing with and then changing to snow."

Though she predicts accumulations "of about an inch or 2," it still could cause slippery roadways as rain freezes beneath the snow.

A sunnier weekend is in store, however, with a high of 32 on Saturday and 42 on Sunday. The mercury will dip to the mid-teens Saturday night and the mid-20s on Sunday, when a patch of sleet and freezing rain is expected to put a dismal close to the weekend.

More rain is expected Monday, with temperatures rising to a high of 50 degrees. Overnight, temperatures should stay above freezing with a low of 33.
