Solanco School District tightens tax collection policies
BY ROXANNE TODD, Correspondent
Any elected tax collector that thinks they can operate without strict accounting measures in the Solanco School District will need to reconsider.
At their meeting Monday, Solanco school board members adopted a resolution establishing elected real estate tax collector policies within the school district.
Now, Solanco School District collects its own taxes. However, in the event an elected tax collector declares their intent to collect taxes, they will have to follow the guidelines set forth in the new resolution.
The resolution states that starting Jan. 1, 2014, an elected tax collector that collects school real estate taxes will be paid 21 cents per tax bill for each one collected and paid to the school district. In addition, all required reports must be filed before payment will be issued.
The resolution also includes a tax collector disclaimer that states that elected collectors have the option to allow the district to collect its own school tax.
In addition, elected tax collectors must keep reports that include a final duplicate accounting report for the county turnover in accordance with applicable county ordinances and regulations.
Elected tax collectors also will have to "adhere to the same district standards for discount, base, penalty collection and calculations" that the district uses.
In addition, the resolution states, "Interest earnings in co-mingled funds with other tax collector accounts are not permitted."
The next Solanco School Disctrict board meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 25 at the central office, 121 S. Hess St., Quarryville.
