Paul John Achtemeier

Paul John Achtemeier, Herbert Worth and Annie H. Jackson Professor of Biblical Interpretation Emeritus of Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Va., died in his home after a long illness on Monday, January 28, 2013.Dr. Achtemeier was preceded in death in 2002 by his first wife, Dr. Elizabeth Rice Achtemeier, to whom he was married for over 50 years. He is survived by his second wife, Dr. Sandra M. Levy; a son, Dr. P. Mark Achtemeier and his wife, Dr. Katherine Achtemeier, of Dubuque, Iowa; a daughter, Marie A. Finch and her husband, Paul Finch, of Norfolk, Va.; five grandchildren, Michael, Robert, Rachel, Sarah and Joshua; two stepsons and their families, and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at noon on Wednesday, February 6, at historic St. John's Episcopal Church, Richmond. The Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Dr. Achtemeier's honor to St. John's Episcopal Church, where he was an active member, (2319 E. Broad Street, Richmond, Va. 23223), or to ForKids, inc., a charity working to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness for families and children (P. O. Box 6044, Norfolk, Va. 23508).
