TO THE EDITORS:

I was struck by the following items in the Jan. 25 edition on the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade.

On the Letters page, Ms. Hemmerich noted "abortion in this country is safe, legal and rare."

On the commentary page, a sad cartoon depicted a baby in heaven saying "55 million of us will not be celebrating the 40th birthday of Roe v. Wade."

To me, 55 million babies killed by abortion in 40 years amounts to 1,375,000 babies per year -- hardly a rare occurrence.

That same day, a Page One story stated: "Another child lost; father charged in death of 4-month-old son."

This a terrible and illegal act -- but -- just a few months before -- it would have been legal to commit violence in the womb by aborting the same child.

I would submit that lack of respect for human life, beginning with abortion, is the underlying cause of child abuse, violence against women and disrespect for life in general.

Once a society loses respect for human life, at any stage, no one is safe from abuse or death.
