Not enough 'good guys'

TO THE EDITORS:

What do we have in common with Argentina and the West Bank? Similar homicide rates by firearm. In fact, per 100,000 population, we have three times the homicide rate than the next closest industrialized nation, Switzerland, which, due to conscription in the military, has the third highest rate of firearms trailing us and Yemen. This was prior to the recent uptick in gun sales and the massacres in Aurora and Newtown.

The gun manufacturers' lobby, aka the NRA, recommends we post armed "good guys" in every school. I guess we need to post them in every movie theater, as well. The first time one of these side-arm-toting martyrs is gunned down by an AR-15, I suppose they'll push for SWAT teams and snipers on the rooftops.

As a defense against tyranny, I doubt our civilian arsenal is any match for an armored personnel carrier. Maybe, next to swimming pools, Black Hawk helicopters will be spotted in every backyard.
