At least 10 injured in 30-vehicle Ind. pileup 3 killed in Detroit pileups Marines skeptical of change Prosecutor gunned down 9/11 judge removes censor
PLAINFIELD, Ind. -- A more than 30-vehicle pileup on a snowy Indiana interstate left at least 10 people injured Thursday.
Most of the injuries in the afternoon pileup along Interstate 70 were minor but one victim's condition was "very critical," Indiana State Police Sgt. Rich Myers said.
Semitrailers sat smashed side-by-side against one another along the stretch about 20 miles west of Indianapolis, with cars and other smaller vehicles pushed to the sides of the roadway. About 20 big rigs and some 15 passenger vehicles were involved in the pileup, Indiana State Police Capt. Dave Bursten said.
DETROIT -- Blinding snow squalls, high winds and a slick highway led to a mile-long series of crashes in Detroit that left at least three people dead, including a 7-year-old boy and 9-year-old girl.
Michigan State Police Lt. Michael Shaw said visibility was extremely poor when the mass of crashes happened on Interstate 75 on the southwest side of the city. At least 13 people were rushed to hospitals, and others were treated at the scene, Shaw said. About 30 vehicles were involved in the accident.
Shaw said the two children who were killed are believed to be siblings, and their parents were hurt in the wreck.
SAN DIEGO -- The Marine Corps commandant says the infantry side is skeptical about how women will perform in those units, and some positions may end up being closed if not enough females meet the rigorous standards.
Gen. James Amos spoke to reporters Thursday at a defense conference in San Diego hosted by the U.S. Naval Institute.
Amos says most Marines support the Defense Department's lifting of the ban last week, which opened thousands of positions to women. But he says the more dangerous, all-male infantry units are more skeptical. Amos says if there isn't enough interest among female service members to join the infantry or few qualify for those positions then they may be closed to women.
The Marines opened their infantry school to women in the fall. Two tried unsuccessfully.
KAUFMAN, Texas -- An assistant district attorney was shot and killed Thursday morning near the North Texas courthouse where he worked, and authorities said they were searching through his cases to try to find clues about why he may have been targeted.
Mark Hasse, 57, had exited his vehicle in the parking lot behind the Kaufman County Courthouse annex and was walking toward the building when a masked gunman shot him multiple times just before 9 a.m., Kaufman County authorities said.
GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba -- The second round of pretrial hearings in the Sept. 11 case sputtered to a close Thursday with the judge ordering the government to remove censorship equipment from the courtroom at the U.S. base in Cuba.
Army Col. James Pohl ordered an undisclosed government agency to disconnect equipment it used to cut the courtroom sound system to prevent the release of classified information to spectators.
Five Guantanamo Bay prisoners, including self-proclaimed mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, are being tried on charges that include murder and terrorism in a military commission.
