"BJ" CannonBetty Jean "BJ" Cannon, of 717 Willow Valley Lakes Drive, Willow Street, PA, passed away on Wednesday, January 30, 2013, at Lakeside at Willow Valley.Born in Greensboro, NC to the late Robert Bryan and Jennie Mae Williams ­Cannon, she grew up in Spartanburg, SC. She moved to Lancaster in 1956 after living in Danville, VA.Ms. Cannon graduated from the Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, Virginia in 1949 with a bachelor?s degree. She was a weekday religious schoolteacher in Virginia, before moving to ­Pennsylvania.From 1961 until her retirement in 1987, Ms. Cannon was a professional Girl Scout executive with the Penn Laurel Girl Scout Council and the Lancaster County Girl Scout Council.Her memberships included: First Presbyterian Church of Lancaster, since 1966, where she was an Elder; served as the nominating Chair of the Council on Alcohol & Drug Abuse; vice president of United Cerebral Palsy; the Mental Health Association of Lancaster County; was a volunteer of the United Way where she served on the budgets and allocations panel; and the Meadia Heights Country Club.In addition to a host of friends, "BJ" is survived by one sister-in-law, Ella Hamilton Cannon of Easley, SC; three nephews, Alan Cannon, Stuart Cannon and Bruce Cannon; and one niece, Jennie Cannon Zbierski. She was a friend to all, a woman of deep faith, and an inspiration to all she touched. She will be missed, but her spirit lives on through her generous heart, which she shared so graciously with all who knew her. The family is grateful for the compassionate care she received at Lakeside at Willow Valley, the tender presence of her good friend, Lorrie Kunes, as well as by the hospice workers in the final months of her life.Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Betty Jean?s Life Celebration Memorial Service at First Presbyterian Church, 140 E. Orange St., Lancaster, PA, on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Dr. Donald Hackett officiating. Inurnment will be private at the Memorial Garden of First Presbyterian Church.
