A Lancaster County resident was honored recently by the American Cancer Society, East Central Division.

Dorothy Tilley, of Manheim Township, was presented with the Excellence in Mission Award at a ceremony held in December at the ACS Lancaster office, 314 Good Drive.

The award is presented to an individual, group, corporation or organization that makes an extraordinary impact on the mission of the American Cancer Society through health initiatives, advocacy or research.

Nominations for the award are submitted by staff and volunteers from throughout the division, which covers Pennsylvania and Ohio.

Tilley serves as the volunteer coordinator for the Road to Recovery program, which provides transportation to and from treatment for people who have cancer and do not have a ride or are unable to drive themselves.

"This certainly is an honor," Tilley said. "But this is very much a team effort. If I didn't have a wonderful group of people working with me, I wouldn't be able to do this."

In the Road to Recovery program, volunteer drivers donate their time and the use of their cars so that patients can receive the treatments they need.

"The drivers have always been the encouragement that keeps me going from one week to the next, and without their enthusiasm and care the program wouldn't be what it is," Tilley said.

Kelly Edwards, a health initiative representative for the American Cancer Society, said that "because of Dorothy's dedication and effort, the program has grown over the past two years."

"When I started, we had 35 drivers and did about 20 rides a week," Tilley said.

Tilley now manages approximately 75 to 80 drivers and coordinates 40 rides on a weekly basis.
