First, legalize medicinal use of pot
TO THE EDITORS:
Columnist Gil Smart's piece in Sunday's paper on legalizing pot was right on the money, but he refrained from giving the argument that is most likely to gain favor. Because we here in Pennsylvania, and particularly Lancaster County, tend to lean toward conservative views, we must first walk before we run.
I understand two Franklin & Marshall staffers did a survey (2010) in which 80 percent of Pennsylvanians favor the legalization of pot for medicinal use. There have been so many documented positive effects reported from medicinal use of pot.
Let's pursue this type of legalization so as to perhaps get some support from our more conservative friends. This would greatly improve the quality of life for those suffering from some forms of illness and disease.
For good or bad, depending upon your beliefs, liberalism seems to be popular in our higher-learning institutions. As these younger Americans mature and take leadership positions in society, legalized pot, with reasonable restrictions and government oversight, is definitely coming. It will just be a little later for us than for most of the rest of our great country.
For now, it truly is time we evaluate the good and the bad and make sound decisions based upon the value medicinal pot use offers.
