Head-on crash kills 2 drivers

An onslaught of crashes, some related to icy roadways, killed two and injured several others Monday in and around the county.
A head-on crash left two people dead in East Donegal Township.
Both drivers, a man and a woman, were killed, according to Susquehanna Regional police Lt. Stephen Englert. He said both victims were Conoy Township residents and there were no passengers in either vehicle.
The names of the victims were being withheld by police Monday night pending notification of family.
The 4:46 p.m. crash happened on an open stretch of road in the area of 1406 River Road, just north of Herr's Market.
Englert said the two vehicles were traveling in opposite directions when the vehicle heading south crossed into the northbound lane.
One of the vehicles went off the road and came to rest in a field.
Englert said the cause of the crash remained under investigation Monday night. Roads were wet but not icy at the time of the wreck, he said.
Between 3 and 4 p.m., a flurry of wrecks were reported in various parts of the region.
In Manheim Township, a vehicle slid off the road, struck an embankment and flipped onto its roof on Landis Valley Road. The female driver had escaped the vehicle when emergency units arrived.
Manheim Township Municipal fire Chief Rick Kane said the woman did not appear to have serious injuries but was taken to Lancaster General Hospital to be checked.
He said the road definitely was "a little slick," but said he couldn't confirm that as the cause of the crash.
In Eden Township, a driver suffered arm, neck and chest pain after the motorist's vehicle struck a tree in the first block of Picadilly Hill Road.
Fire officials at the scene reported the road to be "a sheet of ice."
In Lebanon County, two Lancaster County residents were involved in two separate crashes caused by icy road conditions, according to Cornwall Borough police.
Eileen Lewis, 68, 6340 Jackson Dr., East Petersburg, was hospitalized after her Subaru Outback struck a tree head-on and caught fire around 3:15 p.m. on Pinch Road.
Lewis was unable to exit the car but emergency crews quickly arrived at the scene and extinguished the blaze.
Lewis was taken to Hershey Medical Center, where she was listed in serious condition Monday night.
In a second crash, Ernest H. Freise Jr., 49, 3 Edgewood Drive, Lititz, was not injured when his Ford Expedition struck an embankment and flipped onto its side just before 4 p.m. on the Route 117 ramp from Route 72 North.
Slick roads also were to blame for a crash Monday morning that critically injured a Mount Joy woman.
According to reports, two motorists were hurt when their vehicles crashed head-on shortly after 6 a.m. on an icy patch of road in West Hempfield Township.
Cars driven by Toby A. Rineer, 20, of Lancaster, and Christina G. Haas, 32, of Mount Joy, collided on Prospect Road at Holly Drive, township police Sgt. Jeffery Mullin said.
Haas had to be freed from her car after the wreck.
Both drivers were transported to Lancaster General Hospital, where Haas was listed in critical condition Monday afternoon, according to a hospital spokeswoman. Rineer was treated and released.
Also Monday morning, a minivan collided with a snowplow at the Route 30 West exit ramp onto Harrisburg Pike.
