No 'sunset clause' on Amendment

TO THE EDITORS:

A recent letter stated the "gun control/Second Amendment" debate can be divided into two sides: those who trust our government presently and in the future, and those who do not. The latter group, he said, includes those who wish to preserve their right to protect themselves and freedom, now or in future generations.

It is certainly true that one could categorize folks on either side of the debate in a number of ways. To try to reduce the complexity of this to a question of "trusting" government is ludicrous. Who defines "trust"? By what measure ?

More importantly, the Second Amendment says nothing about trust. The amendment is clear enough, there is no "sunset clause." This suggests the founding fathers realized there could be tyranny anytime.

If people choose to "trust" bigger government to always be benevolent, that's their opinion. But it does not supersede or cancel the Second Amendment, nor does it render it obsolete.

Our currency says "In God We Trust." Beyond that, trust needs a lot of evidence.

The re-introduction of a bill to greatly expand the assault weapons ban, when it has been shown it doesn't work, does not instill any trust in me.
