John H. Henkel, 84, of Strasburg, entered into rest peacefully on Friday, January 25, 2013. Born in Secaucus, New Jersey, he was a son of the late John G. and Louise (Kroling) Henkel. John and his wife, Carol P. (Pearce) Henkel, had celebrated 60 years of marriage together in July. After graduating from Weehawken High School in New Jersey, John attended Rutgers University, before being drafted into the U.S. Army. Upon his discharge, John returned to Rutgers and graduated with a Master?s Degree. In 1960, he and his wife, along with their friends, Joe and Betty Little, moved to Strasburg and owned and operated the Willow Glen Farm. John was a prominent swine farmer and received the Pennsylvania Master Farm award in 1982. He served as past director of the National Pork Producers Assoc. and was the past president of the PA State Pork Producers Assoc. John?s expertise was often called upon to judge the pigs at the Solanco Fair. He was a very active member of Zion U.C.C. in Strasburg.In addition to his wife, John is survived by three daughters: Nancy L., wife of Rich Myers of Morris, NY; Kathy, wife of Andrew Oravetz of Manassas, VA; Jody, wife of Tony Bonazzi of Strasburg; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marion Werner. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ann Koerner.Services celebrating John?s life will be held at Zion U.C.C., 900 Winter Hill Road, Strasburg, PA on Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Robert Bistline officiating. Friends may visit with the family immediately following the service. A private traditional interment will take place prior to the service in the adjoining cemetery.
