The 73-year-old Eckman Road bridge over Mill Creek in West Lampeter Township was closed Wednesday because of safety concerns about rusted support beams.

According to the county commissioners office, inspectors recently found that the steel beams had deteriorated to the point that the bridge deck's load-bearing capacity might be compromised.

The 104-foot-long steel truss span has a 4-ton weight limit and had been identified earlier by the county as a top replacement candidate.

Rettew Associates Inc. was contracted in 2012 to design a replacement structure.

The final design and permitting are nearing completion.

A construction contract is expected to be awarded sometime this year.

Replacement is expected to be completed 12 months after the contract is awarded, and it's estimated to cost $1.4 million.
