'Canes blow out No. 1 Blue Devils No. 25 Miami uses 25-1 run in first half to pull away from Duke ASSOCIATED PRESS,
With a steady din coming from the sea of orange behind the visitors' basket, No. 1-ranked Duke had a tough time making a shot.
The Blue Devils went more than eight minutes without a field goal in the first half Wednesday night, and a sellout became a blowout for No. 25 Miami, which delighted a boisterous crowd with a 90-63 victory.
The defeat was the third-worst ever for a No. 1 team, and Duke's worst in nearly five years.
Durand Scott scored a season-high 25 points for the Hurricanes, and Kenny Kadji added a season-high 22. Shane Larkin had 18 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, and Durham, N.C. native Julian Gamble had 10 rebounds and four blocked shots.
Miami (14-3, 5-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) beat a No. 1 team for the first time, taking control with a stunning 25-1 run midway through the opening half. The Blue Devils missed 13 consecutive shots despite numerous good looks, while four Hurricanes hit 3-pointers during the run that transformed a 14-13 deficit into a 38-15 lead.
Duke (16-2, 3-2) fell to 0-2 when playing on an opponent's court. The Blue Devils' other loss came at North Carolina State, a defeat cost them the No. 1 ranking.
They regained the top spot this week but seemed rattled by the capacity crowd, only the 10th in 10 years at Miami's on-campus arena. Students began lining up for seats outside the arena almost 24 hours before tipoff, a rarity for the attendance-challenged Hurricanes.
But South Florida loves a winner, and the Hurricanes are alone atop the league standings. They won their sixth consecutive game and beat Duke for the second straight time -- but only the fourth time in the 19-game series.
Miami had been 0-6 against No. 1 teams. Coach Jim Larranaga also beat a No. 1 team for the first time.
Seth Curry, Tyler Thornton and Quinn Cook went a combined 1 for 29 for the Blue Devils, who shot a season-low 30 percent. Rasheed Sulaimon led them with 16 points.
Duke went 4 for 23 from 3-point range, while Miami went 9 for 19 and shot 57 percent overall.
Indiana 72, Penn State 49: Victor Oladipo scored 19 points, and Yogi Ferrell added a season-high 15 to help No. 7 Indiana rout Penn State.
The Hoosiers (17-2, 5-1 Big Ten) survived a sluggish shooting first half with strong defense and used a fast second-half start to reassert their dominance in this series that has included only two home losses for Indiana.
Will Sheehey added 12 points for the Hoosiers, who matched a season-high by making 11 3s.
D.J. Newbill had 18 points and Jermaine Marshall finished with 12 to lead Penn State (8-11, 0-7), which has lost seven straight overall and 12 straight on the road in league play.
Florida 64, Georgia 47: No. 8 Florida shook off a sluggish first half and romped past another Southeastern Conference opponent, beating Georgia behind 17 points from Scottie Wilbekin.
Florida (15-2, 5-0 SEC) trailed 27-24 at halftime, making just 1 of 9 attempts beyond the 3-point arc. But the Gators quickly turned things around after the break. Wilbeken and Mike Rosario hits back-to-back treys and forced Georgia into three straight turnovers.
La Salle 54, Butler 53: Ramon Galloway went the length of the court for the winning basket with 2.7 seconds left to send La Salle to a victory over No. 9 Butler.
Fans stormed the court in a wild celebration for the biggest win for La Salle (13-5, 3-2 Atlantic 10) in 33 years. There was some confusion after Galloway's basket and fans were ordered off the court. Butler had attempted a last-second heave that was way off the mark.
New Mexico 66, Colorado State 61: Tony Snell scored 23 points and No. 15 New Mexico held off a late Colorado State rally.
Drake 74, Creighton 69: Richard Carter scored 20 points and Drake stunned No. 17 Creighton handing the Bluejays their first consecutive losses of the season.
Wichita St. 62, Missouri St. 52: Cleanthony Early scored 17 points, Carl Hall added 15 and No. 20 Wichita State rallied for the victory.
Temple 76, Penn 69: Khalif Wyatt posted 26 points, six rebounds, five assists and hit four 3-pointers to help Temple pull away and beat instate-rival Pennsylvania.
Anthony Lee added 16 points and Jake O'Brien 14 for Temple, which has won six straight against Penn under coach Fran Dunphy, who coached the Quakers from 1989-2006.
Temple (13-5) shot 51 percent (25 of 49) and improve to 83-16 with it scores 60 or more points since the start of the 2009-10 season.
Cartwright paced Penn (3-15) with 21 points.
Lehigh 65, Bucknell 62: B.J. Bailey scored 18 points, Mackey McKnight had 17 points and eight rebounds, and Lehigh held off Bucknell to remain unbeaten in the Patriot League.
Holden Greiner had 12 points and seven rebounds for the Mountain Hawks (14-4, 4-0). Lehigh is 4-0 in conference play for the first time since 2005-06.
Mike Muscala had 15 points and eight rebounds for the Bison (16-4, 3-1).
St. Bonaventure 73, St. Joseph's 64: Demetrius Conger had 21 points and seven rebounds, and St. Bonaventure opened a 20-point lead at halftime and held off hard-charging St. Joseph's in Atlantic 10 action.
Matthew Wright scored 18 points and Chris Johnson had 15 for the Bonnies (9-9, 2-3).
Halil Kanacevid had 16 points and six rebounds for St. Joseph's (10-7, 1-3).
Lafayette 63, Holy Cross 53: Seth Hinrichs and Bryce Scott netted 16 points apiece as Lafayette defeated Holy Cross in a Patriot League matchup to snap a two-game losing streak.
Tony Johnson added 15 points and went 6 of 6 from the stripe for Lafayette (9-12, 2-2).
Saint Louis 73, Duquesne 64: Cody Ellis scored 16 points, hitting 11 of 12 free throws, and Saint Louis used a late spurt to defeat Duquesne, ending a two-game skid.
Jerry Jones scored 18 points with a career-high 11 rebounds for his first career double-double for Duquesne (7-12, 0-5), which dropped its seventh straight game.
