John Apple, 71, of Millersville, PA, passed away unexpectedly in his sleep on Tuesday, January 22, 2013. Born on September 5, 1941 in Lancaster, the son of the late Bertha and John Apple, Sr., he is survived by his loving wife, Debra, to whom he was married for 36 years. He is also survived by his son, Chris married to Melissa; daughter, Heather married to Chris Jenkins; and daughter, Melinda married to Andrew Ascosi. He will also be lovingly missed by his six grandchildren, Madalyn, Grace, Gavin, Kellen, Braedon and Emma. John was ­preceded in death by his half-sister, Elizabeth Woodfill of Chicago, IL. John was an Associate Professor in the Department of Wellness and Sport Sciences at Millersville University for 38 years, retiring in 2002 and being named Professor Emeritus. He served as head swimming and diving coach at MU for 20 years. A certified scuba instructor, he taught scuba from 1967-2000. John managed multiple county pools throughout his career. He and Debra owned and operated Skyline Swim Club from 1977-1986.An aquatics specialist with a passion for mentoring young people, John coached countless swimmers for more than five decades at the YMCA, various summer swimming pools across Lancaster County and most recently at LAC and 5 Star Swim Club. A member of U.S. Swimming, Coach Apple was fortunate over the years to have worked with champion swimmers at all levels from age group through high school, college, senior national and Olympic.A lifelong learner, John graduated from McCaskey H.S. in 1959, earned his B.S. at West Chester University, his M.S. at Indiana University and did additional graduate and doctoral study at Louisiana State University and Temple University. Active, outgoing and fun-loving, John was happiest with family and friends enjoying good music, food, libation and conversation. A man of many interests, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, handball, scuba diving, swimming, motorcycling, stamp collecting, reading, chess and travel.Funeral Services will be held will be held at Living Hope Community Church, 2823 Columbia Avenue, Lancaster, PA 17603 on Monday, January 28, 2013 at 11 AM with the Rev. John H. Emmert officiating. There will be a viewing held at the Andrew T. Scheid Funeral Home, 320 Blue Rock Road, Route 999, Millersville, PA 17551, on Sunday evening between 5 and 8 PM and also at the Church on Monday between 10 and 11 AM. Private Interment will be at the convenience of the ­family.
