W. Lampeter to honor its residents

A group of West Lampeter Township residents, by summer, intends to streamline the process of honoring neighbors past and present.

According to Morey Young, who heads the group, the township currently has a process of approvals one can go through to honor a resident with a plaque.

The group plans to begin work on a single memorial naming those who have made the township "a safer and better place to live."

Residents will be able to submit names of potential honorees to a committee. People who nominate accepted honorees would pay a nominal fee for the name to be added.

No tax dollars are being used for the memorial, Young said.

Young said the idea began as a way to honor first responders who went above and beyond the call of duty. The plan grew to include anyone who lived in West Lampeter and made a significant contribution to the township.

About $9,000 of the estimated $25,000 has been raised, Young said.

The committee that includes residents and township employees has not yet determined where the memorial will be placed.

The exact form and number of names to be included has yet to be determined. Young said more than 100 names have already been submitted.

When the fundraising is completed at the end of April, the group hopes to have $25,000. Even if they do not, Young said, the group will base the scope of the project on the amount raised.

Checks should be made payable to the Lancaster County Community Foundation, with "West Lampeter Twp. Memorial Fund" written in the memo.

Nominations of people to be included on the plaque can be made through the township website at www.westlampeter.com or by calling the township at 464-3731.
