Rally slated to heighten awareness of Native American treaty issues

Native Americans and their supporters will rally in Lancaster Square on Saturday, from noon to 3 p.m., in support of the "Idle No More" movement.

Idle No More supports Native Americans in the United States and First Nations people in Canada. It calls on governments to uphold treaties made with native tribes and to protect environmental resources.

The movement sprang up across the United States and Canada in recent weeks after First Nations Cree Chief Theresa Spence went on a hunger strike to initiate a meeting between Canadian leaders and native leaders.

The square is in the 100 block of North Queen Street, opposite Binns Park.
