A Lancaster teenager is dead following a shooting in the 400 block of North Queen Street late Wednesday night.

David Montes, 17, was pronounced dead at Lancaster General Hospital of a single gun shot wound to the chest, according to city police Chief Keith Sadler.

No arrests have been made, and police are not even sure how many shots were fired.

During a press conference at police headquarters Thursday, Sadler said the shooting stemmed from an altercation in front of 423 N. Queen St. between a group of youths, including Montes, and a resident.

The argument escalated to gunfire.

"The police have some idea of what happened, and they're doing follow-up to make sure that what they think happened is what happened," Mayor Rick Gray told a reporter. "I don't think the public has anything to be worried about."

At the press conference, Sadler made a plea for anyone with information to come forward. He said police especially want to speak with any members of the group Montes had been with prior to the shooting.

"At this point, the investigation is on-going," Sadler said. "It's very active, and we are trying to locate the other males who were with the deceased. That's very important to this investigation."

Sadler said it is "safe to assume" that the other youths were friends of Montes, making it "crucial" that "they come forward and offer information."

Asked if a weapon was found, Sadler said, "We're still processing the crime scene and, at this point, can't even comment on that."

Michael George, who lives on the street, said he was in his home watching television, when he heard the group arguing outside.

At some point, George said, he heard four or five gunshots.

When he looked out the window, George saw several people hiding behind a Dumpster parked on the street.

Police officers arriving at the scene a short time later found the 17-year-old lying on the east side of the street, outside 427 N. Queen St.

The teen was rushed by ambulance to Lancaster General Hospital, where he immediately was taken into surgery.

He was later pronounced dead at the hospital, police said.

Initial reports indicated there was a second victim — an unconscious male — who apparently was dragged across the street and placed in a dark-colored vehicle.

Sadler did not confirm that report.

"I don't know where that came from," he said. "We certainly did not put that information out."

Officers spoke to witnesses in the block, as well as people involved in the argument.

Several people were taken to the city police station for questioning by detectives.

"Several people have cooperated," Sadler said.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact city police at 735-3300.

Callers do not have to give their names to provide information.
