Penn State has been tweaking its football schedule for 2013 and 2014. All that's known at this point comes from a release Penn State issued Monday:
"The University of Virginia notified Penn State that it would not be playing the Sept. 14, 2013 game scheduled for Beaver Stadium in order to play a home game on that date. We are working with Virginia to re-schedule the game for Beaver Stadium in a future season. We have begun discussions to find an opponent for the Sept. 14 date and expect to make that announcement very soon."
Even that raises a question or two, since it's not at all clear that, as the release implies, the change was entirely, or originally, Virginia's idea.
(Although Virginia has taken the idea and run with it; it is apparently playing Oregon, at Charlottesville, this Sept. 14, giving it eight home games this season.)
A month or so ago there were reports that Penn State was dropping Virginia, possibly to play Rhode Island, a 1-AA opponent, coached by ex-Millersville boss Joe Trainer, that didn't win a game last year.
That rumor was apparently false, even though RI players tweeted about it and Trainer half-confirmed it before backing away.
Now the heavily-rumored replacement is Central Florida, coached by former Bill O'Brien boss George O'Leary and probably, in 2013, a tougher opponent than UVa.
This lends credence to the theory that it was probably Virginia's idea to drop Penn State, especially since Virginia might be a candidate to join the Big Ten.
Central Florida will come to the Beav this September, so Penn State would go there, to Orlando, in 2014. If you buy into the theory that this satisfies Bill O'Brien's oft-mentioned desire to give the team a "destination," game at a warm-weather site, then playing in Orlando Sept. 14 doesn't make sense, since it's likely to be as warm here as there on that date.
But Penn State could have two open dates in 2014, at least one in November. That makes marginally more sense, but the truth is a regular-season road-game trip is about the same for the players (plane-bus-hotel-meetings-meals-meetings-bus-game-bus-plane-home) whether it's in Florida or Nebraska or Antarctica.
Expect a contract with Central Florida to be announced, well, maybe not soon, but presumably prior to November, 2014.
