When he addresses his next group of aspiring NFL quarterbacks, Matt Nagy likely will mention such virtues as perseverance and work ethic.
And when he does so, he will speak from the heart. Because those homespun ideals clearly are paying off for him.
Nagy, the former Manheim Central High School, University of Delaware and Arena Football League standout, is joining former Eagles head coach Andy Reid in Kansas City, as the Chiefs' quarterbacks coach.
Nagy's hiring was announced by the team on Friday, along with the appointment of former Eagles coach Doug Pederson as offensive coordinator and former Jets assistant Bob Sutton as defensive coordinator.
Also announced Friday were Reid's choices of Eric Bieniemy as running backs coach, Tom Melvin for tight ends and David Culley as assistant head coach and wide receivers coach.
"I'm pleased we were able to get all of these coaches on board," Reid told The Associated Press. "I have relationships with each of them, and I know their past experiences, work ethics and coaching styles. These are high-character coaches, and each one brings something different to the table."
Attempts to reach Nagy on Friday night were unsuccessful.
Clearly, Nagy made a positive impression on Reid during the last several seasons, when he filled a variety of roles on Reid's staff.
In February 2010, Nagy was named an assistant coach for quality control with the Eagles. He served in a supporting role for coordinators Marty Mornhinweg (offense), Sean McDermott (defense) and Bobby April (special teams).
"It's paper work, computer stuff, helping to put the playbook together ... a lot of busy-work stuff," Nagy told the Sunday News at the time. "A secondary part is really getting into the football side of it."
Nagy, 34, did coaching internships with the Eagles during training camp in 2008 and 2009.
He was briefly signed as a player with the Eagles in training camp in 2009, after quarterback Kevin Kolb was injured. His playing role lasted only one day and one practice before the NFL voided his contract.
Pederson, 44, was an NFL quarterback for parts of 12 seasons, mostly as Brett Favre's backup in Green Bay. But he also started nine games for Philadelphia in 1999, Reid's first season with the Eagles.
Pederson began his NFL coaching career in 2009 with Philadelphia and was the quarterbacks coach the past two years.
Reid and the Chiefs are expected to overhaul an offense that ranked last in the NFL in scoring (13.2 ppg) with a league-low 18 touchdowns and league-worst 169.6 passing yards per game. Veteran quarterbacks on the roster are Matt Cassel, Brady Quinn and Ricky Stanzi.
Nagy has been the offensive coordinator at Palmyra High School, as well as an assistant coach at Cedar Crest and Manheim Central.
He played in the Arena Football League until 2008, twice leading teams to the Arena Bowl, the Columbus Destroyers in 2007 and the Georgia Force in 2006.
At Delaware, Nagy set more than 20 career passing records, including attempts, completions, yards and touchdowns. He earned All-America honors as a senior after setting season marks for attempts, yards and TDs.
