As a remodeler who's been in business since 1978, Dave Petrisek has built additions, finished basements and constructed sunrooms.
But a multiphase project his company worked on recently in Manheim Township "incorporated just about everything," said Petrisek, president of Dutch Quality Contractors.
It was one of his business' "more ambitious undertakings," he said.
Dutch Quality, in East Lampeter Township, was honored for its improvements to the circa-1900 farmhouse by winning two Remodelers Awards of Excellence in the 2012 contest sponsored by the Building Industry Association of Lancaster County's Remodelers Council.
One, in the Whole House Remodel category (Division V), was for a phase of the project that included a room with a swimming pool. The second, in the Addition category (Division III), featured an in-home theater.
Dutch Quality, which has captured numerous other awards over the years, was hired by homeowners Dr. Shaka Monroe, a veterinarian, and his wife, Jennifer, after they learned the company built a sunroom and master suite for the home's previous residents.
The farmhouse was about 2,300 square feet when the Monroes purchased it, Petrisek said, and is now approximately 10,000 square feet.
He declined to say what the whole house remodel and addition cost, but noted that they were the second and third phases of work he did for the Monroe family. "We have a great working relationship" with them, Petrisek said.
Dwight Miller Residential Design Ltd., East Petersburg, collaborated with Dutch Quality on the design for phases II and III.
The room with the swimming pool was part of an expansion that also included multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, a finished basement, and an outdoor living space boasting a kitchen, refrigerator, stove, oven and baking area.
The 2 1/2-story pool room is equipped with a pebblestone floor, a special dehumidification system, a spa, a changing/powder room, a refreshment area, and a radiant floor heated by hot water.
A curved sunroom, connected to the pool area, features a copper roof.
As part of the remodel, Dutch Quality also installed an elevator from the basement to the second floor, and added a full basement with play area.
The previous basement was "partial and very small," Petrisek said, so the contractor had to dig out a larger area under the house to accommodate 10-foot ceilings and more space.
The basement now has a guest room and bath with steam shower; a powder room; a children's playroom; a video arcade room; and patio doors with terraced retaining walls.
After the remodel was finished, Dutch Quality started work on an addition featuring two more bedrooms and bathrooms; a wraparound porch; a play area with a gnome door; and a first-floor, 31-by-21-foot theater room. That was completed in July 2010.
The home theater boasts a 10-foot screen, a high-definition projector located in the ceiling, and custom-made cabinets that hide the electronics.
"All the cabinet work was done in our shop," Petrisek said.
The theater, which seats at least 12 in stadium-level fashion with lit steps, has electronically controlled leather chairs, uRay LED lighting, and an iSky ceiling that resembles a starry sky, he said.
Also, "we did acoustical things to minimize sound transmission," Petrisek said.
From the outside, the theater looks like a traditional room because Dutch Quality added two faux windows with shutters on the one wall.
