The State System of Higher Education has chosen a New York state college president as Millersville University's next president.

The Pennsylvania system's board of governors selected John Anderson from a field of three candidates.

Anderson will replace Francine McNairy, who is retiring in January after nine years as president.

Anderson has been president of Alfred State College, a member of the State University of New York system, since 2008.

He was among three candidates recommended for the post by the university's board of trustees in November.

The other two candidates were Vilas Prabhu, the provost and vice president for academic affairs at Millersville University, and Kent Neely, a provost and vice president at Western Oregon University.

Anderson has also served as executive vice president and provost at Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y, and other high-ranking positions at various institutions.

A biography of Anderson posted on Alfred State says his expertise is in strategic planning, institutional assessment, sustainability and civic engagement.

He holds a doctorate in education from Cornell University, a master's degree in physics from the State University of New York Geneseo, a bachelor's degree in physics from SUNY Brockport, and a degree in math and science from Westchester Community College.
