Four people who have made significant contributions to athletics in the Octorara Area School District were recently inducted into the Octorara Sports Hall of Fame, Class of 2012.
The four are Deb Feather, Lisa Rudisill, Kim Beattie-Hart and Gary Wetzel. All were recognized in a ceremony on Gene Davis Varsity Field during Homecoming.
• Feather was an all-league goalie in field hockey, a basketball player and a four-time all-league softball player who was selected to play third base during all-state championship play.
Feather was also an athlete at Slippery Rock University and was inducted into that university's hall of fame in 2006. Feather has coached softball, volleyball, basketball and track at Octorara, where she teaches health and physical education.
She has successfully written grants for the school district and helped Octorara players earn one softball district championship.
• Rudisill is a 1988 Octorara graduate. At Octorara she played multiple sports and earned seven varsity letters in softball and volleyball. Rudisill was also a college athlete at Shippensburg University, from which she graduated in 1992.
At Shippensburg, Rudisill was a four-year volleyball starter and earned the school's all-time career record for kills and digs. She was the first Shippensburg player to be named PSAC player of the year, and was inducted into the university's hall of fame in 1988.
• Beattie-Hart is also a 1988 Octorara graduate. As a member of the school's track team, she won awards including league titles in javelin, long jump and the 400-meter relay. She placed second in states in the 100-meter, third in the 400-meter relay, and fourth in the long jump.
Beattie-Hart held two school records in the sprint medley relay and javelin. She is on Octorara's all-time top 10 list for nine track and field events.
• Gary Wetzel taught and coached at Octorara for 26 years. He coached a varsity basketball team which won the district's first Southern Chester County League championship, and his teams won league championship in two subsequent seasons.
Wetzel, who was once named Coach of the Year by the Daily Local News, coached his basketball team to a district title during the 1985-86 season.
