A Lititz teenager was drunk and searching for a song on his iPhone when the car he was driving crashed, killing his passenger, police said.
Christian Mark Will, 18, was arraigned Thursday on multiple charges, including homicide by vehicle while DUI, in the July 5 Warwick Township crash.
Will also had traces of marijuana in his system at the time of the crash, according to court documents.
Dylan Dieffenbach, 18, of Moorland Court, died when Will lost control of his car on Owl Hill Road, according to police.
Will was trying to find a song on his iPhone as he sped through a turn and lost control, according to an arrest affidavit.
Will is free on $75,000 unsecured bail. A message left for Will at his home wasn't immediately returned Thursday night.
"This case is tragic. Christian lost his very best friend in this accident," Jeffrey Conrad, Will's attorney, said after charges were filed. "He mourns the loss of Dylan every day."
Will, of the 1200 block of Orchard Road, wasn't seriously hurt in the crash.
According to police, Will was driving west on Owl Hill Road when he lost control of a Chrysler LHS and it struck an embankment, rolled onto its roof and hit a tree, police said. Dieffenbach was trapped in the car.
A deputy coroner pronounced Dieffenbach dead at the scene. An autopsy showed Dieffenbach died of multiple traumatic injuries.
Tests indicated that Will had a blood-alcohol content of .085 percent two hours after the crash. Drivers in Pennsylvania are considered legally drunk if their blood-alcohol content is .08 or above.
Will told police he had three or four beers before driving and also had smoked marijuana, according to the affidavit.
Police determined Will's car was traveling about 20 mph too fast for the turn.
Both teenagers recently graduated from Warwick High School.
Northern Lancaster County Regional Police Sgt. Rodney King filed nine charges against Will, including two felonies.
Will is charged with homicide by vehicle, homicide by vehicle while DUI, DUI, traffic violations and underage drinking.
Homicide by vehicle while DUI carries a mandatory 3-year prison sentence upon conviction.
