The historic Haldeman Mansion in Bainbridge has received a grant that will "help preserve an important piece of our shared heritage."
The Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society was awarded a $5,000 grant by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, through the Louis J. Appell Jr. Preservation Fund for Central Pennsylvania.
It will be used to develop a plan to preserve and sustain the historic mansion, 230 Locust Grove Road.
"Without organizations like Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society, communities and towns all across America would have a diminished sense of place," said Trust President Stephanie Meeks.
The mansion's preservation society aims "to restore and preserve the existing buildings and grounds of the Haldeman Mansion property to be used to promote history, education and community use," one description states.
The mansion, completed in 1811, is the birthplace of Professor Samuel Steman Haldeman (1812-1880), a prominent naturalist and linguist.
