A tournament will be held Saturday, Aug. 18, to commemorate the grand opening of the Ship Rock Disc Golf course in the Strasburg Township's community park along the Pequea Creek.
The course, which has been in the works since 2010, is a part of the master plan for the township park, which will also feature walking trails. The course was envisioned by local students Kyle Meck, Josh Jantzi, and Travis Dombach. The trio planned the 18-hole course, raised money for the project and built the course with help from fellow disc golf enthusiasts.
The course includes tee pads, tee signs, and official disc golf baskets, and was funded mainly with donations from local businesses and organizations.
The tournament will feature men's, women's, and mixed doubles divisions. As many as 50 players are expected to attend. Registration and check-in will take place from 7:30 to 9:30 .a.m. on Saturday, and the first round will begin at 9:15 a.m.
After a short break for lunch, a second round of play will be held. The day will wrap up with an awards ceremony.
Interested parties can check out the course at http://shiprockdiscgolf.com/ or register for the tournament online at http://bit.ly/OkFW43. The tournament is open to the public and local residents are invited to participate.
Registration costs $15 or $20 depending on the division and includes a free lunch. Players will also need to bring their own disc. Following the tournament, the course will be officially open to the public and residents will be welcome to play for free.
Disc golf is similar to traditional golf, but instead of using a ball and clubs, players try to throw a disc into a metal basket using the fewest number of strokes possible.
Players begin by throwing from a tee pad and then throw from the spot where their disc lands. The hole is completed by throwing the disc into a metal hanging basket.
