The baby died early this morning at Hershey Medical Center after suffering penetration injuries, internal bleeding and a torn liver.
Joseph Michael Murray, 21, of 31 Lee Drive, was charged late Monday night with aggravated indecent assault, aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of children in relation to the baby's assault.
He could be facing further charges, police said today.
The baby was undergoing an autopsy at press time.
State Police Sgt. A.J. Krawczel said police would take the results to the Lancaster County District Attorney's office and discuss further charges against Murray.
Police were alerted to the child's injuries when her mother, Tiffany Shaub, called 911 at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, according to Murray's arrest warrant affidavit.
Shaub said her daughter was experiencing a "medical problem'' and that she was driving the baby to Lancaster General Hospital, according to the affidavit.
Shaub requested a police escort. Police instructed her to pull over and have an ambulance transport her child to the hospital.
When the child reached LGH, a helicopter transported the baby to Hershey Medical Center.
Doctors at Hershey discovered the child had suffered injuries including multiple external bruises to her abdomen and chest, a bruise on her head and penetration injuries, the arrest warrant said.
A pediatric surgeon told police the child "was in very critical condition and would require immediate surgery to stop the internal bleeding.'' The injuries, the doctor said, "were consistent with physical abuse and ... were only hours, not days, old.'' During the surgery, the doctors discovered that the baby's liver was torn, the affidavit said.
Early Monday morning, police interviewed Murray, who told them that between 4 and 6 p.m. the baby vomited on his shirt, according to the affidavit. Murray changed his shirt and the baby's diaper.
"The baby vomited and defecated multiple times in the diapers and on Murray's shirt,'' the affidavit said. "Murray admitted he became frustrated and angry.'' He then said he picked up the baby "roughly,'' placed her on an air mattress and assaulted her, "causing the baby to cry.'' Neighbors said today that Murray and Shaub, his girlfriend, had recently moved in with his grandmother and the grandmother's husband, who live at the Lee Drive address.
The couple was fixing up a trailer at the Buck Hill Mobile Home Court on Route 272 near the Buck, planning to move there.
Murray worked at a steel company in southern Lancaster County, neighbors said.
Murray was committed to Lancaster County Prison, with a cash bail set at $500,000.
