Lancaster Country Club's David Denlinger fired 2-under 68 Monday at Rolling Green Golf Club in Springfield to move into a tie for fourth after the first round of the Pennsylvania Golf Association Amateur Championship.

Denlinger, a 21-year-old Lancaster Mennonite graduate who will be a senior on the Charleston Southern University golf team this fall, is four shots off the lead held by Huntingdon Valley Golf Club's Andrew Mason, who posted 6-under 64 Monday, including a 4-under 30 on the back nine.

Mason won the Pennsylvania Amateur last year when it was held at Lancaster Country Club.

Pinecrest Golf Club's Nathan Smith carded 4-under 66 to move into second, while Sean Knapp of Pittsburgh National Golf Club took possession of third with 3-under 67.

Brady Goodling (71, tied for 11th), a Manheim resident who plays out of Lebanon Country Club, Conestoga Country Club's Zak Drescher (72, tied for 16th) and Lancaster Country Club's Craig Hornberger (73, tied for 20th) also moved into the top 20 Monday.

Denlinger, who started on the back nine, tripped out of the gate with a bogey on the 244-yard, par-3 10th hole, before getting back to even par with a birdie at the par-4 12th.

After another bogey at the par-3 16th, Denlinger made the turn in 1-over 35, before returning to even with a birdie on the par-4 first.

He moved into red figures for good with a birdie at the par-3 third before getting to 2-under with another birdie at the 207-yard, par-3 sixth.

Denlinger will begin his second round on the first tee Tuesday at 7:50 a.m.

The low 40 players and ties at the conclusion of play Tuesday advance to Wednesday's final round.

Other local players in the field are Lititz resident and newly-crowned Lanco Open champion Brixton Albert (74, tied for 28th); Meadia Heights Golf Club's JD Dornes (74, tied for 28th) and Craig Kliewer (75, tied for 44th); Honeybrook Golf Club's Daniel Liebowitz (77, tied for 64th) and Aaron Fricke (82, tied for 101st); and Bent Creek Country Club's Conor Gilbert (78, tied for 72nd).
