Hundreds of hungry patrons have crowded North Queen Street as the 14th annual Celebrate Lancaster kicks off with the opening of about two dozen food stands. The street is closed from Penn Square to Lancaster Square.
Thousands more are expected throughout the day and evening to sample the local fare and dance to the sounds of bluegrass, Latino music, R&B and rock 'n' roll.
The event will culminate with a large fireworks display that begins at 10 p.m.
Admission is free.
The first two blocks of North Queen Street were closed to vehicle traffic at 9 a.m.
Parking is available at the Prince, Water and King Street garages. The Lancaster Parking Authority will charge a flat fee of $5 for the evening at the Prince and Water Street garages beginning at 4 p.m.
Here's a schedule of events:
• More than 20 food vendors are open for business along North Queen Street and in Lancaster Square. They'll serve throughout the afternoon and evening.
The vendors include 717 Italian Ice, Absolute Cheese Steaks & More, Asia Carry Out, Auntie Anne's, Bricker's Famous French Fries, Caribbean Way, Dutch Country Concessions, Forno Inferno, Greco's Italian Ice, Hess's Barbecue, Ice Cream Express, J&J Kettle Korn, Kunzler Hot Dog Cart, Rachel's Café & Creperie, Rice and Noodles, Sa La Thai, Schnader's Concessions, Sherri's Crab Cakes, T & J, Tropical Smoothie Café, and Urban Olive.
• 5 p.m. Live music begins on two stages, one at Penn Square and another at Binns Park. Performers include honky-tonk and folk artist Jordan Rast; Celtic and folk band Burning Bridget Cleary; and folk rockers The Ragbirds.
Also, two pub areas will begin serving locally brewed beers and wine.
• 10 p.m. Fireworks show begins.
The Mayor's Office of Special Events released the following list of street closings throughout the day:
6 p.m. — The 000 and 200 blocks of North Christian Street; 000 block of West Chestnut Street; 000 and 100 blocks of East Chestnut Street; 100 and 200 blocks of North Cherry Street; 000 and 100 blocks of East Fulton Street; 000 and 100 blocks of East Orange Street; 000 block of West Orange Street; the 000, 100, and 200 blocks of North Duke Street; and the 200 block of North Queen Street.
