A man escaped unharmed from a burning house in Providence Township Monday morning — with a little help from man's best friend, officials said.
Justin A. Taylor's dog barked loud enough to awaken its owner, who was able to get out of his smoke-filled house at 325 Cinder Road, according to Jamie Welk, chief of Quarryville Fire Company.
"He woke to a house full of smoke," Welk said of Taylor. "He got out safely with his dog before we arrived."
Taylor was the sole occupant of the modular home, the chief said.
A neighbor called 911 to report the 6:48 a.m. fire.
About 40 firefighters battled the blaze, Welk said.
They mounted an interior attack until the floor of the home started to fail and they had to evacuate, he said. They finished extinguishing the fire from outside the home.
No one was injured, Welk said, and the fire did not spread to a nearby garage.
The fire destroyed the one-story home, he said.
Damage was estimated at $160,000 to the building and $80,000 to its contents, according to Welk and state police.
The fire started in the kitchen, state police said.
Trooper James DeWalt, a state police fire marshal, is investigating to determine the cause of the fire.
The fire closed Cinder Road between Schoolhouse Road and Woods Drive for about four hours.
