A Lancaster man bought more than $13,000 worth of jewelry and tires in the city in April, but police said there was one problem.

Brian Keith Davis, 34, paid for them using bad checks, city police said in a criminal complaint.

A manager at Lebzelters Goodyear Automotive, 300 N. Queen St., told police that Davis bought four vehicle tires for $1,042.80 there on April 19.

Ream Jewelers reported that Davis bought a men's ring with small diamonds, two watches and a women's multidiamond ring at the 58 N. Queen St. store on April 20, 21 and 23, police said. The purchases were valued at $5,506.70.

Leporte Jewelers told police that Davis bought a watch, a pair of women's diamond earrings and a women's gold wedding band with six diamonds from the 645 Harrisburg Ave. store on Friday and Saturday, police said. The purchases were valued at $6,776.58.

All the purchases were made using personal checks from two of Davis' bank accounts that had been closed, police said.

Davis admitted to police on Tuesday that he made all of the purchases on closed accounts and intentionally deceived the merchants, police said.

Police charged him with theft by deception before District Judge Bruce Roth.

Davis was arraigned and committed to Lancaster County Prison in lieu of $25,000 bail, city police Lt. Todd Umstead said.
