Comcast customers will pay more to watch their favorite cable programs beginning May 1.

The Philadelphia-based cable giant said its average subscriber will see their bill increase by 3.8 percent.

Customers currently paying promotional rates won't be affected until their promotions expire, according to company spokesman Robert Grove, who blamed the hike on higher programming costs and increased operating expenses.

"We continue making investments in next-generation technology to add value to our products and improve service, and in just the last year alone we've added several channels and launched new interactive applications and multiplatform content that customers want and value," Grove said in a statement.

The upcoming increase follows a 3.3 percent hike that began on Aug. 1.

Comcast Xfinity TV Limited Basic subscribers will see rates increase $1.04 to $20.99. Expanded Basic subscribers will see rates increase $2.21 to $48.71, and Standard Basic subscribers will see rates increase $3.25 to $69.70.

HD Triple Play package subscribers will see increases of $5 to $10, with packages ranging from $144.99 to $209.99.

XF Triple Play and MultiLatino bundles will each increase $5, with packages ranging from $136.99 to $234.99.

Most Triple Play packages also will increase $5, with packages ranging from $84.85 to $124.99.

Economy XF Triple Play and MultiLatino Plus XF Paquete Triple will remain at $84.85, and MultiLatino Extra XF Paquete Triple will remain at $94.85.

Comcast, which serves about 22 million TV customers, more than 18 million Internet customers and more than 9 million telephone customers in 39 states, isn't the only cable provider to increase rates.

DirecTV increased its rates by an average of 4 percent in February. The company said the hike reflected a rise in its programming costs of about 10 percent for this year.

As with Comcast, DirecTV said customers currently paying promotional rates won't be affected until the promotions expire.

Dish Network increased rates in February 2011 by as much as $5 for some services. It froze the new rates as well as its unchanged rates through January 2013.

A message left with Blue Ridge Communications was not immediately returned.
