The Marietta Boat Club's building was destroyed Tuesday in an early morning blaze that is being investigated by the state police fire marshal.

Police say the cause of the fire appears to be suspicious, and could be linked to other problems that happened overnight near the club and in the riverside town.

Investigators also discovered that someone tampered with the ignitions of boats stored at the club, which is in a grassy, wooded area between the railroad tracks and the Susquehanna River at the edge of town.

Also, several cars were vandalized overnight in the borough, said Lt. Stephen Englert of the Susquehanna Regional Police.

"The ignitions in the cars were tampered with, and the ignitions in the boats were tampered with," Englert said.

The one-room boat club's headquarters, where members gathered to socialize, was reported on fire at about 4:30 a.m.

The flames could be seen from across the river, in York County.

Firefighters arrived and had the blaze under control by about 5 a.m. but the building could not be saved. There were no injuries.

Englert said Tuesday that no damage estimate was available for the clubhouse, or the damage to the nearby boats, some of which were moored in the river near the shore.

The damage to cars included two that had their ignitions damaged and one that was ransacked on Chestnut and Pine streets in the borough, Englert said.

No damage reports were available for the car incidents Tuesday, Englert said.
